Coping With Fibromyalgia Chest Pain

The chest pain that often comes with fibromyalgia can be overwhelming and difficult to deal with, but don’t despair — there are certain exercises that you can use to cope. By using the steps outlined below, you’ll find dealing with your fibro is easier and chest pain is greatly reduced.

Why Chest Pain Occurs

Those with fibromyalgia experience chest pain due to the intercostal muscles becoming inflamed and pressing against the rib cage. While chest pain isn’t always present with fibromyalgia, it often happens during flare ups. The chest wall becomes tight and the muscles encase the lungs, causing a lot of pressure to build up, resulting in pain. When this happens, it often causes alarm.

Relieving Fibromyalgia Chest Pain

One effective method that works to relieve pain from fibro is a stretching technique.

  1. Sit on a bench or a hard chair and sit up straight. Put your left hand on your head and put your right hand at your side for support.
  2. Take a deep breath and bend your body to the right.
  3. Move your right hand so it’s sitting behind your hip and repeat the stretch, this time leaning back slightly.
  4. Move your right hand forward and repeat the stretch, this time leaning forward slightly.
  5. Do each stretch three to five times, then repeat on the opposite side.

Prolonged Pain

If you continue to experience chest pain, even when flare ups aren’t present, you should schedule an appointment with your doctor. If you have an infection, it can cause you to experience chest pain and you’ll need a course of antibiotics to rid your body of the infection.


Many fibro patients find this an easy and effective exercise to do. Another great tip is to try to keep your stress levels down. While it’s easy to become overwhelmed when chest pain occurs, stressing out over it can make it worse. When you experience chest pain, take a few deep breaths, relax your body and perform the stretches to ease the discomfort.
